Code Blue Communications demonstrates Bluetooth 1.1
approved Interfaces to Medical Devices
Code Blue Communications, Inc. has demonstrated the
wireless transfer of electronic patient data from medical devices utilizing
Bluetooth 1.1 approved interfaces, at the Bluetooth Developers Conference.
Using connectBlue’s Serial Port Adapter™ technology, Code Blue
Communications worked with patient monitors from medical device industry leaders
Welch Allyn, Inc., and Nonin Medical, Inc., to demonstrate both a complete
portable monitoring solution and the first Bluetooth wireless wearable medical
sensor shown to the public.
The Welch Allyn PropaqÒ CS portable monitor was demonstrated transmitting
waveforms for a full set of patient parameters including multiple ECG channels
and respiration. “We are investigating Bluetooth wireless technology for
use in our products to enable an increased range of communications options,
especially the ability for various wireless technology to coexist creating an
integrated, untethered healthcare solution,” says Jim Welch, VP and CTO for
Welch Allyn, a leader in ISM band wireless products. Currently Welch
Allyn’s products operate on their FlexNetÔ patient monitoring system, which
integrates both wireless and hardwired devices on one network.
The Nonin wearable device incorporated their pulse oximetry technology
transmitting oxygen saturation (SpO2), pulse, and continuous plethysmographic
waveform. The device was demonstrated with the Bluetooth link to a
companion stand-alone monitor. “We are exploring the combination of our high
performance oximeter solution with the Bluetooth technology to dramatically
improve patient mobility and to simplify the monitoring of oxygen saturation for
the health care provider. The Bluetooth technology is a perfect fit and
extension to our extremely small and low power pulse oximetry technology”,
says Gary Tschautscher, President and CEO for Nonin Medical Inc. (a leader in
high performance solutions for patient monitoring).
“These products demonstrate the capabilities of
Bluetooth in this market, as well as validate the concept of a Patient Area
Network,” says Bill Saltzstein, President of Code Blue Communications, Inc.
“The Serial Port Adapter technology has Bluetooth 1.1 and FCC approvals which
pass-through to device manufacturers allowing them to focus their resources in
other areas since no additional work is necessary to incorporate the
industry-standard wireless technology into their products.”
The products demonstrated are not currently being offered for sale utilizing
Bluetooth wireless technology and they have not yet been approved by the
appropriate governmental agencies
Code Blue Communications Inc.
