releases for inclusion on Bluetoothweb November 1, 2001 Fujitsu Limited Licences Parthus Bluetooth Technology to Power Next Generation Wireless Devices Parthus and Fujitsu achieve industry first with the successful qualification of Parthus' BlueStream IP in Fujitsu's initial Bluetooth baseband chip Tokyo, Japan - November 1, 2001 - Parthus Technologies (Nasdaq: PRTH; LSE: PRH), a leading supplier of semiconductor platform-level Intellectual Property (IP) for the mobile Internet market, today announced that it has completed a licensing agreement with Fujitsu Limited (TSE: 6702) for Parthus' BlueStream Bluetooth platform. As part of the agreement, Parthus has delivered a complete Bluetooth solution including baseband hardware, software stacks and digital interface to multiple radios. Through its licensing of Parthus' BlueStream, Fujitsu has already commenced the deployment of complete certified Bluetooth chips (including the baseband and software protocol stacks), and will target both the cellular phone and automotive markets with initial shipments in early 2002. Bluetooth is rapidly becoming the de facto standard for wireless communication between a range of personal electronic devices such as mobile phones, handheld devices, PC peripherals, automotive, home and industrial appliances. By eliminating the need for cables between inter-connecting devices, individuals can share voice and data using broadband and secure local wireless connections. By 2005, Cahners In-Stat forecasts that Bluetooth technology will be used in almost 1 billion devices, ranging from mobile phones and desktop computers to digital cameras and automobiles. "We are delighted to be working with Parthus in developing Bluetooth products" said Moriyuki Takamura, General Manager, Fujitsu Electronic Device Group. "Parthus is clearly a leader in the Bluetooth arena and we believe our leadership position in the wireless semiconductor space makes this an ideal partnership. We believe Parthus' unique approach to developing complete applications for mobile devices has helped speed the time to market for our Bluetooth baseband LSI which will start to ship in January 2002." "With over 180,000 employees worldwide, reported revenues of $45billion and leadership in the semiconductor wireless market, today's announcement with Fujitsu represents a significant milestone for Parthus. It is also an industry-first as no other company has announced a qualified Bluetooth product based on independent silicon IP," said Brian Long, CEO of Parthus Technologies. "Fujitsu, by targeting a broad range of markets with their Bluetooth products, such as cellular phones and automotive navigation/audio sectors, will significantly expand the pervasiveness of Bluetooth technology." The Parthus BlueStream Baseband IP provides Fujitsu with all the digital signal processing and protocol hardware to interface with external radio IC's, audio CODEC's and host devices, enabling a fully functional Bluetooth 1.1 solution. The embedded processor and associated firmware allow baseband integration into peripheral or standalone applications. The host interfaces, USB v1.1 and UART enables the LSI (integrated circuit) to target both the cellular, PC and car accessory applications. An on board PLL enables a range of standard wireless system reference frequencies allowing easy integration with various external radios. Finally software controlled power management circuitry allow the performance and power profile to be tailored to the customer application. Fujitsu are expected to ship volume silicon products in quarter one 2002.
